Hinge vs Bumble: Dating Abroad

Tinder is arguably the most popular dating app for young people around the world but in cities like London, Paris or Berlin, simply swiping can make it difficult to find a date. Enter: Hinge.

Why Hinge Is Better Than Tinder

  1. Likes

Hinge allows you to see who likes you before you’ve matched! Therefore you are able to skip the waiting game by matching automatically. This is great in large cities because you don’t have to wait for someone to like you back and you can grab a date much faster.

  2. Messaging

Maybe you just got off the plane and no one has liked you already? Well, Hinge allows you to send anyone a message without matching first. Shoot your shot early on.

  3. Lower Like Limit

Tinder allows you to swipe almost endlessly. Hinge has a much lower like limit which forces people to be really intentional with who they like. You know for a fact they are at least somewhat interested, instead of swiping right aimlessly.

  4. Bio-prompts

Hinge requires to answer three bio-prompts. These are things like: “I’ll fall for you if…”, “One thing I’d like to know about you is…”, etc. You can ask someone to be your tour guide before you see your profile.

  5. Compatibility

When making your profile you will also be asked about if you smoke, drink, have kids, religion, have pets, etc. And then based on those answers Hinge will prioritize people in the area that they think you would be compatible with.

The Benefits of Bumble

  1. Initiation

Safety is always a priority when dating abroad. If you are visiting this post a female identifying person, you have the opportunity to rack up matches and then only reach out to those who give you good vibes.

  2. Friends

We all know Bumble has the Bumble BFF feature but I can’t say that I ever used it prior to travel. You can find other traveler’s who need a companion for a night out or find a local who is willing to show you their city in the most authentic way possible.

  3. Matriarchy

The app puts females in the position of power. Hopefully, by using Bumble rather than Hinge or Tinder, the app is also attracting male users that reject the ways of toxic masculinity and gender norms. In short, you’re more likely to find someone who respects you.

After many international dates, I believe Hinge is significantly better than Tinder. While you may not be in the city or even the country long enough for a second date, users on Hinge are more likely looking for something more meaningful than someone on Tinder and would gladly go on a date to just show you the city from a local’s perspective. But like with any online date, be mindful of your surroundings and your situation.
